Android Goes Open Source
Description: On the eve of the official launch of the first Android powered handset, the T Mobile G1, search giant Google has shaken the mobile device industry again by making public the entire Android platform source code. "We want to do more than just keep up; we want to lead the way, to try things out, to add the new features that everyone else is scrambling to keep up with,â? engineer Dave Bort said. The Android Open Source Project Web site contains a variety of developer resources, including a project layout, release features, a project road map, and information about licenses. Android could theoretically be incorporated into any device limited in terms of memory, processing power, or screen size. The possibilities range from the likely automobile GPS systems or cable set top boxes to the improbable an internet ready microwave, for instance. By releasing the Android source code, Google hopes to provide the nations independent programmers with a sophisticated but constantly improving operating system that will provide direct competition to Windows Mobile and Apples iPhone. Conceivably, Android could grow into an operating system capable of taking on Windows Vista or Mac OS X. Android is not entirely open source, as independent products created in Android do not themselves have to be open or shared. To find Telecom jobs in your area, click here.
